The outstanding success of the afternoon was from Bethany Year 4 who jumped 3.69metres in her age group Long Jump event.  This turned out to be the longest jump of the day in all of the age groups.  She will also be representing London South in the National Championships at Birmingham.

The Year 6 Athletics Team

Also at the area championships there were some other good performances.  Alana came second in both the 80m sprint and high jump.  Victoria was second in the long jump, Katie Duffy second in the 600m.

The Baston Juniors have been busy during half-term taking part in various sporting events.

The next day Victoria Ward was at the Black Lion Centre, Gillingham for the ASA Kent Swimming Championships.  Victoria swum a personal best of 1.28.01 in the 100m Individual Medley and gained a medal for 6th position in Kent.

On Wednesday Bethany was invited to a 3 hour talent ID afternoon at David Lloyd Tennis Centre, West Malling.  She did fitness tests and tennis drills under the scrutiny of many LTA officials.  There were only 10 girls chosen from Kent and she will be sent the results of the assessment at a later date.

In the Parklangley Competition on Friday, in the Red tournament for experienced players Elle Palmer got into the last 8 of the A tournament and Daisy Mills was the runner up of the B tournament.

In the less experienced Red tournament Abbie Saunders got into the semi-finals of the B tournament and Olivia Bateson was the winner.

Four of our Year 4s took part in the orange tournament and Alannah Sweeting was the runner up.

By the end of the tournament our girls had achieved a vast improvement in their play.

Kent Schools’ Annual Tennis Doubles Championships

On Friday 20 June 26 Baston Junior girls took part in the Kent Schools’ Annual Doubles Tennis Championships at the Bromley Tennis Centre.  Baston had more girls playing than any other school there.  In the Red doubles tournament all our pairs won matches and Baston’s 1st and 2nd pair got through to the last 8.  They came 5th and 6th out of 32 pairs - well done to Elle & Daisy, Jaspreet & Helena.

In the full ball and green tournaments all the pairs had good matches winning lots of matches in these very high standard county tournaments.

In the Orange Tournament Baston girls all played exceptionally well and the Final was between Baston pair 1 playing against Baston pair 2!  Jessica and Lauren beat Bethany & Alannah to become the Kent Orange doubles champions. Baston pair 3 Chloe & Paige came 4th. There were 30 couples entered.

Gold medals were awarded to Jessica and Lauren.

One of the most pleasing parts of the day was when the Tennis Centre manager went up to Mrs Wimble to say how well mannered and polite the Baston girls had been all day – so well done to all girls.

KENT CHAMPIONS

Living up to the title of Kent Tennis School of the Year Baston School won the British Schools' Kent Mini Tennis Red Team Tournament held at the Bromley Tennis Centre on Wednesday 23 May 2007.

County Champions!!

The Baston Teams with the winning team holding their certificates

The annual Mini Tennis Red Team Event was as popular as ever with nineteen teams from all over Kent taking part.  Other schools taking part included Bromley High, Combe Bank, Derwent Lodge, Hilden Oaks, Russell House, Holy Trinity Sidcup, Walthamstow Hall and St Katherine's.

Both the Baston 1st and 2nd teams won all their group matches and progressed to the semi-finals.  The first team met Bromley High in the semi-final and easily reached the final with convincing wins in all four singles matches, thus rendering the doubles matches unnecessary.    They very nearly met our 2nd team in the final but the 2nd team just lost to Derwent Lodge in a very close and exciting match, only decided on the very last sudden death point of the concluding doubles rubber.

In the Final against Derwent Lodge the Baston 1st team once again won all their singles matches comfortably and, leaving the doubles un-played as they could not effect the result, became the Kent Schools Team Champions.

Congratulations to the winning team of Bethany, Alannah, Paige and Amber.  Throughout the whole tournament not one of them lost a match, either singles or doubles making them highly deserving County Champions.

KENT FINALISTS

It was the turn of Years 4, 5 and 6 to play in the British Schools’ Kent Mini Tennis Team Tournament on Wednesday 13 June.

In the morning Baston had 3 teams playing in the Orange event in which there were 19 teams from schools all over Kent.  All three teams played a very high standard of tennis and every girl won at least one match. Baston 2nd team came 2nd in their group missing a place in the Semi finals by 1 point!  The 1st team won their group and then played a knockout match to gain a place in the Semi Finals.  Here they met and beat Bromley High 2nd team and to book themselves a place in the Final where they played Bromley High 1st team!  The match was close but Baston finished as runners up.

The finalists Alexandra, Georgia, Annabelle and Victoria are pictured above with their certificates.

In the afternoon in the Green Tournament we entered one team who all played very well and finished 2nd in their group, only just missing a place in the Semi-Finals.   Pictured below are the team members with their certificates; Molly Grace Lydia and Victoria.
