YEAR 9 TRIP

TO

THE GLOBE THEATRE

On Thursday 17 April the girls from Year 9 went to the Globe Theatre to take part in a Workshop on Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest' which they are studying for their Key Stage 3 examinations in English.

As well as participating in the Workshop, the girls were given a tour of the theatre and were able to watch part of a dress rehearsal for the play 'King Lear'.

The workshop involved a series of drama activities based on the two scenes which the girls have to know for their examination.  It gave them a good understanding of the different ways that actors interpret the text for the stage.  Working on the text as a performance made a refreshing change from writing about the play.

The day should help the girls to improve their performance in the May examination and, in any event event, it was enjoyed by everyone.

POLICE VISIT

Girls from Years 1 & 2 were on their best behaviour when a policeman visited the school.

After looking at the various items of uniform and handling some equipment, the girls learnt about different areas of police work.

They watched a short video about river police and the use of helicopters and dogs to track criminals.

Sadly the dog was unable to attend as he was busy on an assignment but the girls were not too disappointed.

The highlight of the afternoon was the taking of fingerprints and the receiving of goody bags.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and I am pleased to say the handcuffs stayed securely in their holder!

Readathon

Years 7, 8 and 9 have raised £123.70 for this year's Readathon.  The Readathon is a sponsored read where girls were sponsored for the number of books they had read since Christmas.  The money goes to two children's charities: the Roald Dahl Foundation and Sargent Cancer Care for Children - both charities support the care of sick children.

ON HOLIDAY WITH
THE WISE OWL

Pictured above is Megan who won the competition to discover where the Wise Owl had been for his latest holiday.  She correctly discovered from the pictures behind her that the Wise Owl had been to Avignon and the Camargue during the Autumn half term.

Taster Day

A Taster Day was held on Wednesday 21 November for potential Year 7 pupils in September 2008.  On a crisp sunny morning the girls from Baston's Year 6 were joined by a similar number from state and independent primary schools.

With so many girls this year potential seniors were split into two large groups and given an insight into life in the Senior School at Baston.  They had short lessons from most of the Senior School teachers all based on a theme of a day trip to France.

Among the activities French cheeses were tasted, croissants and hot chocolate  were on offer and red wine was tested (not tasted!) for acidity.  The day finished with tea for the parents in the Drama studio in West Block.  The girls enjoyed the day and we look forward to welcoming them into the Senior School in September next year.

Cake and Biscuit Sales

During the term the Senior Forms have each held a Cake and Biscuit Sale and together have raised a total of £130.50.  This money will be used to buy Christmas presents for the old people at Isard House.

The presents will be taken down by the choir who will be singing carols to the residents during the last week of term.

Early Years Visit

to Hayes Library

On Monday 12 November Reception  and both Kindergarten classes walked down Baston Road to visit Hayes Library.  They liked hunting for books about bears and dogs but particularly enjoyed using the librarian's date stamp!

The visit concluded with a lively sing-song followed by a story.

GCSE Presentation Evening

Some of last year's Year 11 are pictured here proudly holding their GCSE certificates which were presented to them by the Headmistress, Miss Kate Greenwood on Tuesday 16 October.

Particular congratulations to Becky Orme who was presented with the Rana Cup for the best GCSE results and Helen Jordon who received the Landers Endeavour Cup.

ANNIE

Last week the West Wickham Operatic Society took over the Churchill Theatre in Bromley for their thirtieth birthday production of Annie.  The two Baston girls pictured below had major roles in the performance.

Gabriella (left) in Year 10 played the lead role of Annie.  She acted superbly and sung the songs beautifully.  Daisy of Year 3 acted a very mischievous orphan called Molly.  She had a large number of lines to learn for someone so young.

Well done to both girls for their excellent performances and for keeping up with their school work!!

BASTON 75 ANNIVERSARY FAIR

The 75th Anniversary Fair was held in the school grounds on Saturday 14 June.  There were over eighty different stalls and arena events were held throughout the afternoon.  Thirteen girls from Year 4 performed a dance to "The Circle of Life".  The Parents Association ran six stalls including the barbecue, the bar, teas and coffees, coconut shy, china smashing and knock down ducks and made in the region of £2000.  A really great time was had by the thousands of people who attended.

WATER AID

The day before the summer half term The Junior and Senior girls of the school joined forces to raise money for Water Aid.  They wore their own clothes for the day and took part in a giant inter-house relay race carrying buckets, jars, bottles and many other assorted receptacles of water from a “reservoir!” to a large tub and back again.  They had to negotiate a line of obstacles trying not to spill any water as they did so.  This simulated the situation in many underdeveloped countries where children in rural areas spend hours each day walking to collect water for their families.  Over a billion people in the world are without safe water and lack basic sanitation.

Not only did the girls raise £660 for this worthwhile cause but had tremendous fun at the same time.
