BASTON BULLETIN

A fortnightly report of events in the School

22 June 2007

MAGNIFICENT MASTERCHEF  Last week brought the Junior Masterchef competition to a very energising finale.  Professional chef, Alastair McConkey, had the very arduous job of picking a winner from; Megan Byrne Yr 5, Grace Long Yr 6, Lydia Ridge Yr 6 and Larelle Sheikh Yr 6.  The girls were amazingly efficient, they not only prepared a two- course meal, but cleaned and cleared their kitchens - all in just one hour!   The winner will be announced at the Junior Prize Giving on Friday 6 July.

JUNIOR ASSEMBLY  The girls in Years 1 and 2 eagerly came to school on 14 June in order to ‘dress up’.  They performed the Happy Prince to parents and friends and are congratulated for their excellent acting, clarity of speech and expressive delivery of their lines.  Although the Prince turned from gold to grey and the swallow died, it did, I am glad to report, have a happy ending.

PICNIC IN THE ORCHARD   Yesterday, 21 June, saw all the girls in Reception to Year 6 clamber onto rugs and blankets to consume vast amounts of food.  So much, in fact, they were still eating 45 minutes later!  All in all, a definite success, and marked in the diary for next year!

NEWS FROM THE EARLY YEARS . . .

Everyone in the Early Years is working hard to make their classrooms look lovely for Celebration Day on Friday 6 July.

We are also practising for our presentation of ‘The Little Red Hen’ on the same evening. Hopefully you will have received a piece of paper by now asking for the colour clothes your daughter needs to wear for this.

The older girls, Reception and Upper Kindergarten, are looking forward to their visit to Drusillas next Wednesday.  PLEASE NOTE THE EARLY START – 8.15am at the Pavilion for an 8.30am prompt get away!  We are expecting to return to school at approximately 4pm.

On 2 July we have Open Swimming (Reception) as well as Open Gymnastics (UKg), and this starts a week packed full of activities.  There is so much going on at present, you need to check your school calendars on a daily basis!

MINI TENNIS

It was the turn of Years 4, 5 and 6 to play in the British Schools’ Kent Mini Tennis Team Tournament on Wednesday.

In the morning Baston had 3 teams playing in the Orange event in which there were 19 teams from schools all over Kent.  All three teams played a very high standard of tennis and every girl won at least one match. Baston 2nd team came 2nd in their group missing a place in the Semi finals by 1 point!!  The 1st team won their group and then played a knockout match to gain a place in the Semi Finals.  Here they met and beat Bromley High 2nd team and beat them to book themselves a place in the Final where they played Bromley High 1st team!  The match was close but Baston were the runners up.

In the afternoon in the Green Tournament we entered one team who all played very well and were 2nd in their group, only just missing a place in the Semi-Finals.

The Annual Mini Tennis Doubles Championships were held at the Newstead Tennis Centre on Friday 22 June.  A total of 248 children took part!

In the Red Event our 3 pairs played a very good standard of tennis and 2 of the pairs reached the Semi-finals both narrowly missing a place in the final.  They then played each other to gain 3rd and 4th place and our 3rd pair finished 9th out of 23 pairs.

The Orange pairs also reached the Semi-finals and again narrowly lost and had to play each other  to gain 3rd and 4th place and our 2nd pair finished 6th out of 20 pairs

In the Green Event our 1st pair had a very close match in the semi-finals which they lost to the eventual winners.  The standard of all the play was excellent but more important than anything was the sense of fair play, good manners and sportsmanship that was displayed by the Baston girls and commented upon by the organiser and several teachers and parents from other schools.
