BASTON BULLETIN

A fortnightly report of events in the School

18 May 2007

HELLO!!

A WARM WELCOME to the two new girls who joined this week

Shelbe Hassan

Year 4

Abby Pallant

Reception

We hope you will both enjoy your time at Baston!

. . .  AND GOODBYE!!

Good luck   Today was Years 11’s last day in school before they start their study leave - their GCSE examinations will start next week.  We celebrated their last day with a special luncheon for the girls and staff and we thanked them for their contribution to the school.  We would like to wish them well in their forthcoming examinations.

DETLING TRIP  Last Thursday Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a trip to the Kent Schools’ Farm Fair at Detling.  The day was filled with a variety of activities from sheep-dog training, locally grown produce and recycling to cattle farming.  The highlight of the day was the ‘Sheep Show’ where an ‘over-enthusiastic’ New Zealander introduced the different varieties of sheep from around the world and the show ended in the girls all performing a dance to their favourite music.  There was also a chance for sausage and cheese tasting!  The girls and teachers learnt a lot about the world of farming and luckily the rain stayed away!

TIRESOME TESTS  Some of our Pre-Junior and Junior girls will be heartily delighted to see the end of this week, as they will be able to say goodbye to Key Stage 1 and 2 tests.  Mrs Higgins and Mrs Robson are both proud of the way their forms have tackled these nationally standardised assessments - the girls certainly deserve good results after all their hard work.  Key Stage 1 results will be given out at the Parent Appointments on 28 June, whilst Key Stage 2 results normally arrive back from the markers just before PrizeGiving.

JUNIOR MASTERCHEF 2007  Can it really be that time again?  Years 5 and 6 Cookery Club members are now preparing their own selection of dishes in club sessions whilst being assessed on their cooking and organisational skills.  If this week’s offerings are anything to go by, the choice of finalists is going to be extremely difficult!

AN ADVENTUROUS WEEK AHEAD is planned next week for the girls in Years 5 and 6.  They are setting off on Monday and will return on Friday 25 May.  It promises to be a fun-packed week of adventure activities and a spot of ICT – let’s hope the weather improves!

HOLA!   Reminder about the Junior Spanish Club.  It will be held each Monday AFTER half-term between 3.45 and 4.45pm.  The sign-up sheet is now full!  Gracias!!

GARDENING CLUB   The Junior gardeners have been showing their ‘greenfinger’ skills these past few weeks.  They have planted Marigolds and sown a variety of vegetables ready for the summer and next term’s dinner plates!  Look out for the runner beans  -  they have already started their race up the bean poles!  Can you guess what vegetables the gardeners are actually growing?  Please, please - if you have any surplus, unwanted plants we would be more than happy to take them off your hands.  See Mrs Robson after the half term break  -  many thanks.

A THANK YOU MESSAGE   “A BIG thank you to you all for supporting Billie and me in our Race for Life.  We raised £524 for Cancer Research”.  From Sharon and Billie Allen.

PA UP-DATE on the Sponsored Wellie Walk.  We would like to thank everyone for their help and support in raising a fantastic £650 towards the PA funds.  A special thank you to Elly Scott who collected an amazing £130!!  Well done to everyone.  The money will be spent on equipment for the Early Years Department.

STRAY CLOTHES  This is the term when the lost property box in the Junior school fills up with un-named white socks, vests and knickers!  In order to avoid embarrassment, please make sure ALL your smalls are named!

NEWS FROM THE EARLY YEARS . . .

All the Early Years entertained their parents dancing around the Maypole last week and looked very pretty in their dresses.  Queen Grace, Queen Katerina and Queen Alice looked very regal and were crowned by Miss Greenwood.

We are supporting the ’BIG’ School’s Charity Event which will be on Friday 25 May, by filling empty Smartie tubes with 20 pence pieces.  When you think that the tubes have to be emptied of chocolate first  -  well, you can imagine how keen the girls are to do this!

The results of the Easter Bonnet Competition, which took place at the end of last term, were as follows:

Ellie Bennett                                Upper Kindergarten

Rebecca Finch                             Lower Kindergarten

BULLETIN - CAUGHT IN THE WEB!!  This will  be the last paper copy of the Baston Bulletin.

As from after half term the Bulletin will continue to appear but will only be posted onto the Baston School website - www.bastonschool.org.uk.   This will save paper costs, photocopying time and costs and allow us to introduce colour into the publication.  So log-on and browse through the website to catch up with events happening during the week.
