BASTON BULLETIN

A fortnightly report of events in the School

12 October 2007

SAYERS CROFT  On Friday 28 September Years 3 and 4 embarked on an action-packed weekend away in Dorking.  Despite the horrendous downpour on their arrival which did not dampen their spirits, they got stuck into all the activities on offer – including learning to make a bed from scratch!  The girls scuttled up the climbing wall, hung from trees, melted marshmallows, ate lots and slept very little!  Overall a great weekend had by all the girls and staff.  A BIG thank you to Mrs Richards, Mrs Ward and Mrs Robson for taking the girls on a fantastic Sayers Croft activity weekend.

NEWS FROM THE EARLY YEARS . . .

*  The girls had a very exciting nature ramble this week, where they skilfully managed the art of ‘bark rubbing’; they collected many interesting little treasures that autumn offers (and some not so interesting and a little slippery!!).  Once we returned to the classroom, the girls were busy making an autumn tree out of all the leaves collected and concentrated very hard on ‘leaf rubbing’.  We have now managed to bring autumn into the classroom and it looks splendid!

*  For Charity Day on Friday 19 October, the Early Years will be doing a sponsored ‘hedgehog collage’.  The girls will be busy at home, using all sorts of materials in making their hedgehog come “alive”!  All proceeds will go to the NSPCC.

CAKE AND BISCUIT SALE   Well done to Year 7 in raising £22.05 on Tuesday 9 October and also to Year 8 who raised £19.35 on Tuesday 2 October.  Once again thank you to girls and parents for all your generous donations in making and buying cakes for the girls to sell.  It’s the turn of Year 11 next week and Year 10 on Tuesday 13 November.

THE BIG, BAD WOLF was spotted again in the Junior School on Thursday 11 October.  Red Riding came close to being gobbled up but luckily the woodcutter came to her rescue with a swift blow of the axe!   This was the last of the Junior Assemblies on the theme of Traditional Stories.  Well done Years 1 and 2, everyone thought your acting was brilliant.

IN THE PINK!  Baston goes pink on Friday 10 October!  The Senior School are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness and are holding an “in the pink day”.  Girls will donate money in order to wear something pink.  In the afternoon there will be stalls selling pink cocktails and pink cakes.  Girls will be able to have their nails painted pink, pink make-up and pink hair ribbons.  There will also be a pink tombola.  Hopefully, lots of money will be raised!

A SPOONFUL OF MEDICINE!  Last Friday, during Year 2’s Science lesson, the girls were given the chance to ask Mrs Farrow lots of questions about being safe with medicines.  Mrs Farrow says that the girls asked lots of very interesting and relevant questions and hopes that the answers she gave helped them to understand why we take medicines and the importance of handling medicines with adult supervision only!

JUNIOR CLUBS:

Adios to Chatter Chicas – the last Chatter Chicas will be on Monday 15 October for Year 6.

However . . . . Performing Arts Club is starting after the half-term holiday.  It will run on Mondays AFTER school from 3.40pm to 4.30pm in the Drama Studio!  All Years 3-6 are welcome.  Girls must ensure that they ‘sign-up’!

Gardening Club – the season has now drawn to a close.  The harvest has been picked and we are all getting the benefit of lovely ‘home grown’ vegetables at lunch times.  Meanwhile, the gardeners have been clearing the pond of excess foliage.  Mrs Robson has put on her waders and, much to the amusement of the girls, got stuck herself in the middle of the pond!  However, it was all worth the effort, as the pond is starting to look almost clear for the all-important pond dipping next Spring.

SPORTING RESULTS . . .

THE ROAD TO ENGLAND NETBALL  On Sunday 7 October Ellie Duffy-Penny, in Year 9, attended trials for the Kent netball training squad, which is a stepping stone for anyone wishing ultimately to represent England at Netball.  Over 170 girls were competing for just 60 places.  The day started at 9.00am with an hour of warm ups and drills and finished at 5.30pm after numerous games of Netball under the scrutiny of the Kent Selectors.  The number of girls was whittled down as the day went on and Ellie was eventually selected as one of the 20 girls who will train at Greenwich University at Avery Hill.  This is a GREAT achievement – Well done Ellie!

26 Sept  Netball: U15 v Langley        lost 6-20

29 Sept  U15 Lacrosse Tournament at Benenden

The standard was very high; however the girls put on a brilliant performance showing dedication and commitment and did not give up once.  They should all be praised for their team spirit and hard work.  Baston won 1 out of 4 matches played.  On the day, the Kent selectors chose 36 girls to attend the final Kent trials which were held at DCPS on the following day.  Jessica Wimble was selected to attend the trials and whilst taking part in a valuable experience, earned herself a well deserved place in the Kent team – Well done Jessica!
