BASTON BULLETIN

A fortnightly report of events in the School

8 June 2007

CHARITY DAY

Friday 25 May was our Charity Day.  The school was a more colourful place than usual as girls paid £1 to wear their house coloured Mutfi clothes.

The main event of the day was the charity walk which took place in the afternoon.  Many thanks to Years 7 & 8 who blew up all the red, blue and yellow balloons and marked out the course, adding a colourful, festive feel to the event.

The walk itself was great success and it was pleasing to see everyone in the school, from Reception to Year 10 taking part with enthusiasm, although at varying speeds!!  Many family members came to watch.  Some took part, including babies in pushchairs, toddlers, mums and dads and even one granddad!

We have now collated all the results as follows:

In third place with an average of 5.5 laps per girl - Wilberforce

In second place with an average of 5.8 laps per house - Pitt

The winners with an average of 6.1 laps per girl - Darwin

Well done Darwin!

The main purpose of the day was to raise money for our three chosen charities:

Anti-Slavery International  -  Chartwell Cancer Charity  -  RSPB Save Our Albatross

Commendations and a small prize for the girls who raised the most Sponsor money:

Senior School - the prize goes to Rachel Zieminski who raised £100

Junior School - the prize goes to Alannah Sweeting who raised £70

Donations by parents during the walk raised £79.  Sponsor money from the girls is still coming in but as of today’s date the total raised is £1348.  So well done to everyone involved.

LA VIDA BUENA!  El club Espaňol fue muy divertido el lunes.  In other words, Spanish Club on Monday was great fun!  The girls were introduced to vocabulary about themselves, such as name, age, birthday, brothers and sisters and numbers to 10.  The second half of the club was spent in the Junior Art Room where the girls were getting messy making their very own maracas!  Next week ‘aceitunas y tortilla’ olives and omelette as the girls are introduced to Spanish dining!

ISLE OF WIGHT 2007  Years 5 and 6 returned to school on Friday 25 May, exhausted from a packed week’s worth of activities but excited to spread the word on what they had seen and done.  The weather was ‘fabulous’ and they managed to spare a half hour, amidst all activities, to dip their toes in the sea!  A BIG thank you to Miss Greenwood, Mrs Robson and Mrs Ridge for making sure the girls had a really great time.

THE HEAT IS ON in the Cookery Club kitchen!  The following girls will be donning their Chef’s hat and producing a mouth-watering recipe for the finals of Junior Masterchef, to be held on Wednesday 20 June:  Larelle Sheikh, Lydia Ridge, Grace Long and Megan Byrne – we wish you all the very best of luck!

NEWS FROM THE EARLY YEARS . . .

The Early Years are now entering their busiest time of the year!  All the girls were delighted to dance in front of their mummies at our Open Dance sessions before half-term.  As soon as we returned from this short holiday the staff were very pleased to meet with parents for the Kindergarten Parents’ Meeting in the Junior School.  Reception class parents will have their appointments on 28 June.

Our next exciting event is the Induction Day on Wednesday 13 June.  Reception will spend a day in Year 1, Upper Kindergarten will spend a day in Reception and Lower Kindergarten will spend some time in Upper Kindergarten, while the new girls will become used to their new surroundings.

We shall be collecting in all the “fill a Smartie tube” this Friday.  If you have forgotten yours please bring them in as soon as possible.  We hope to top the fantastic sum which the BIG School has already collected for our chosen charities.

The whole department is starting to rehearse for our Summer Production for the Celebration Evening on Friday 6 July at 4.00pm.  Please speak to your daughter’s Class Teacher to find out what colour she needs to wear for our play.
